YSU falls to defending conference champion Green Bay

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State women’s basketball fell 58-50 to defending conference champion Green Bay in Horizon League action on Thursday night.

Despite falling behind 10 after the 1st quarter, YSU was able to cut the deficit back to single digits before halftime and even got as close as down 6 in the 4th quarter before falling.

YSU freshman and West Branch product Sophia Gregory notched a team-high 13 points while fellow freshman Erica King also scored 12 points.

Also for the Penguins, Jewel Watkins notched 9 points on 3 three-pointers and Haley Theirry added 7 points and a team-high 6 rebounds as well.

For Green Bay, Natalie McNeal led all scorers with 17 points and Callie Genke also pitched in 11 points as the Phoenix move to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

With the loss, YSU falls to 7-8 on the season and 2-3 to begin Horizon League play. Next, the Penguins hit the road to take on Wright State on Sunday, Jan. 12.
