Wilkes-Barre Mayor Brown: Baseball facility damaged by fireworks to be rebuilt by spring

WILKES-BARRE — Mayor George Brown, at Thursday’s regular council meeting, gave an update on efforts to rebuild a local baseball field after it was heavily damaged by a Fourth of July fire last year.

The press box and concession stand of the Holy Redeemer softball field on Wilkes Lane were demolished as a result of the blaze, and thousands of dollars worth of equipment had to be replaced.

Prompted by a question from Council member Stan Mirin regarding the field, Brown said the goal is to have it ready by the time the softball team begins practicing this spring.

All of the building materials are on site and all of the damaged structures are set to be rebuilt, including the press box and some of the dugouts.

Progress will continue once the weather improves.

“It’s going to be a beautiful facility,” Brown said.

The borough’s insurance carrier will pay the cost of the repairs.

Following an investigation, it was determined that the blaze was caused by fireworks.

Agenda items

Also during the meeting:

• Council approved the re-appointments of Robert Koval, Robert Hogan and Ruth Whalen to the General Municipal Authority.

Their new terms will expire Dec. 31, 2028.

• Hayden White was reappointed to the city’s Zoning Hearing Board with a term expiration date of Jan. 24, 2030.

• Council approved a resolution proclaiming April as Fair Housing Month.

According to the agenda, the city’s proclamation is meant to “encourage its citizens and organizations to celebrate diversity and value the harmonious communities of neighbors to support the goal of equal opportunities for all people.”

April was declared Fair Housing Month last year as well.
