Former US Senator Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption, the Manhattan federal court announced.
The former chairman of the powerful US Senate Foreign Relations Committee was found guilty last July of 16 felonies, including bribery and fraud.
It was also the first time a US senator had been convicted of acting as a foreign agent.
The court ruled that in exchange for gifts he received, Menendez exerted influence to provide aid to Egypt and Qatar.
A regular presence in Cyprus, Menendez was stripped of his honorary citizenship of Paphos last year. In 2023, he was awarded gold medal ‘for his contribution to the struggle of the Greek Cypriots for justice and liberty’.
