Smith-Enke lanes to close late tonight

If you’re planning a late-night drive tonight, you may do well to avoid Smith-Enke Road.

Individual lane closures will take place at the John Wayne Parkway intersection tonight as crews complete electrical work on the new traffic signals, according to the Maricopa Police Department.

Crews will close one lane at a time in each direction as they adjust and test the signals beginning at 8 p.m. Additionally, the traffic signals will be shut off briefly around 11 p.m. to complete the work.

“We advise people to be very cautious through the area, to go slow and watch for crews,” said city spokesperson Monica Williams. “Officers will be on-site the entire time.”

The months-long construction project is part of the city’s plan to “increase the intersection’s capacity to handle higher traffic volumes,” according to a statement from the local government. This includes additional left turn lanes and the newly opened “free flow” right turn lane onto northbound JWP.

The project is expected to be completed this spring. Click here for details.
