Shickshinny man charged with disarming Taser from police officer

NANTICOKE — A Shickshinny man was arraigned Monday on allegations he disarmed a Taser from a Nanticoke police officer during a struggle.

David Peter Kostrzewski, 41, of Bilby Hill Road, was a passenger inside a vehicle that was stopped for an unreadable license plate and inoperable lights on Broadway Street at about 12 a.m. Thursday, according to court records.

As officers were identifying occupants of the vehicle, Kostrzewski used another name, court records say.

Police in court records say Kostrzewski removed his hands from his pockets with his hands clenched. Kostrzewski raised his hands, dropped suspected drug packets and ran away initiating a foot chase, court records say.

Kostrzewski allegedly ran under a bridge where he stumbled and fell on the ground.

An officer jumped on Kostrzewski who initiated a fight, court records say.

During the fight, Kostrzewski was stunned by a Taser from the officer as Kostrzewski managed to disarm the Taser from the officer, court records say.

A second officer arrived to assist in apprehending Kostrzewski.

Kostrzewski was arraigned by District Judge Michael Dotzel of Wilkes-Barre Township on charges of disarming a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct. He was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail.
