Scranton man charged with stalking women at fitness facilities

EDWARDSVILLE — A man sentenced in 2012 to state prison for stalking a woman inside a church and her place of employment was arraigned Wednesday on allegations he stalked several women at fitness facilities in Edwardsville and Wilkes-Barre Township.

Jeffrey John Hergert, 50, of North Rebecca Avenue, Scranton, was charged by detectives with the Luzerne County district attorney’s office with stalking at least four women inside and outside Planet Fitness in the Gateway Shopping Center, Edwardsville, and at Crunch Fitness near the Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre Township in 2024, according to court records.

Hergert would initiate conversations with the women, wait for the women outside the fitness facilities, and approach their vehicles as they parked or drove away, court records say.

Conversations Hergert allegedly initiated usually involved the women’s relationships.

Hergert was arraigned by District Judge Kyle Halesey of Hanover Township on five counts each of stalking and harassment. Hergert was jailed without bail at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility without bail as Halesey deemed him a flight risk and a danger to society.

Court records say Hergert in 2012, who resided on Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre at the time, was charged with stalking a woman when she attended mass at a South Wilkes-Barre church and at her place of employment on Carey Avenue in Wilkes-Barre.

Hergert was sentenced in October 2012, to one-to-three years in state prison on stalking and harassment charges, court records say.
