The implementation of resources to provide personal hygiene products to Winchester High School students took place on Thursday, September 26th. FFA members took time during their most recent Chapter Meeting to create storage shelves, sort and organize donation items into totes to be placed in what is called The Care Closet.
The Closet, or vacant room, is located on the second floor of the high school and will be available to any high school student in need of personal hygiene products, which can be used at school or taken home as needed. The resource was made possible due to the Living to Serve Grant the Winchester FFA was awarded recently in the amount of $700, which was used to purchase shelving and storage totes.
“The students did a great job of separating items into categories and working together to pack the items into totes,” WHS Agriculture teacher Alexis Carroll said. “We received a little bit of everything that had been posted on Facebook.” She said plenty of soap, body wash, deodorant and feminine products had been donated but items like Q-tips and facewash are still in need. It’s unsure right now which items will be in greatest demand so FFA members will take inventory each week to see which items are being used the most.
“The students knew they were doing something important to help their classmates,” Carroll said. “I could see how proud they were of their work when we were finishing the project.”
Suggested donation items include shampoo, soap, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, hair brushes, feminine products, razors, body wipes, socks, lotion and laundry detergent.
Donations for the Care Closet can be made from 8 a.m.-3 p..m from Monday-Friday at the Agriculture Classroom on the south side of Winchester High School by the football field.
