School board to elect president, VP next meeting

New leadership could join some new faces at the Maricopa Unified School District board meeting next week.

In addition to three newly elected board members attending Wednesday’s meeting, members will also elect a president and vice president to serve one-year leadership roles.

Robert Downey is currently finishing up a third term as board president, while Patti Coutre has served as vice president since October 2023. It is unknown if the two plan to retain their seats for another year.

In November, Maricopans voted overwhelmingly in favor of Carolyn Lopez to retain her appointed role as school board member, while also bringing back former board member Ben Owens. Shawnté Rothschild narrowly defeated former MUSD student Nicolas Yendrzeski for the final seat on the board.

The board meeting will be held in the District Administration Offices at 44150 W. Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and begins at 6:30 p.m.
