In a cold and wet game attended by over 1,000 fans, Xaverian Brothers High School (XBHS) edged out Needham 14-7 in a hard-fought matchup on Thursday, December 5 at Gillette Stadium.
Xaverian struck first with a long touchdown pass on the opening drive, followed by a successful PAT, ending the first quarter up 7-0. They extended their lead in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown and another PAT, leading 14-0 at halftime.
Needham showed resilience in the third quarter, narrowing the gap with a touchdown pass and a successful extra point to make it 14-7. Despite their efforts, including an interception to halt a Xaverian drive, Needham couldn’t close the gap in the fourth quarter.
Despite this loss, the Rockets held an overall record of 12-1 and 5-0 in the league. This single loss does not diminish the incredible season that the team had.
On Tuesday, December 12, The Rockets celebrated Coach Doug Kopcso and three great football signings. Coach Kopcso won Patriots High School Coach of the Year. Senior player Will McDonald signs to USMA – Army, senior player Charlie Someone signed to Holy Cross University, and Gatorade Player of the Year Aidan Williams signed to Lehigh University.
Congratulations to the Rockets for their valiant efforts this season and to the senior players as they move forward.
