Richland County woman charged with accessory to killing of K9 Bumi

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Richland County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate an early morning shooting that took the life of K9 officer Bumi.

The incident occurred near the 100 block of Alida Street in the early hours of December 23rd. Early last week, Richland County Deputies responded to calls of a stolen vehicle. The pursuit ended with one of the suspects shooting and killing K9 Bumi.

RCSD has arrested three teenagers in connection with the shooting, including the alleged shooter. The 13 -year-old  suspect faces charges including attempted murder, killing a police dog. possession of a stolen vehicle and more.

Friday, Sheriff Leon Lott announced the arrest of the 13-year-old suspect’s mother, 34-year-old Shameka Williams. She is being charged with accessory after the fact after surveillance video shows her picking up her son from the vicinity of the incident. Lott says the suspect’s clothes and shoes were hidden at Williams’ home.  

Sheriff Lott says Williams can also be held civilly liable for the killing of K9 Bumi. He also expects another parent of one of the teenagers involved to be arrested in the near future on similar charges. RCSD hopes that this new parent accountability initiative sets an example for the community.
