Police: Woman facing charges after yelling racial epithets

WILKES-BARRE — A Wilkes-Barre woman is facing charges after she allegedly yelled racial epithets at two black women and sprayed one of them with pepper spray.

Melissa Brown, 43, of Kulp Avenue, approached two women standing on the porch of an adjacent apartment and yelled racial epithets and sprayed a woman with pepper spray on Jan. 15, according to court records.

When the two women retreated into their apartment, Brown brandished a baseball bat and smashed a window and taillights on a parked vehicle before spraying pepper spray inside the vehicle, court records say.

City police charged Brown with ethnic intimidation, simple assault and criminal mischief. The charges were filed with District Judge Thomas Malloy of Wilkes-Barre and mailed to Brown.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled on March 5 in Luzerne County Central Court.
