Newport Township woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty

WILKES-BARRE — A woman from Glen Lyon, Newport Township, charged by humane officers with the SPCA of Luzerne County of starving a Pit Bull pleaded guilty to a felony animal cruelty offense in Luzerne County Court.

Crystal Lynn Roper, 35, of East Main Street, was charged in August 2024, after humane officers first investigated a complaint about a thin dog at her residence in December 2023, according to court records.

The dog named Bella and was estimated to be five-months old when humane officers visited Roper’s residence, court records say.

Bella remained with Roper as the canine looked satisfactory, was active but looked slightly thinned.

Humane officers received another complaint about Bella in April 2024, when the dog was too weak to stand on its own, too weak to eat, and was inside a cage filled with feces and urine-soaked pads, court records say.

Bella was taken into protective custody by humane officers and was nursed back to health.

Roper pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals before Judge Michael T. Vough.

Roper is scheduled to be sentenced March 6.
