SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — An E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s has infected nearly 50 people across multiple states, including Utah, and has led to the death of one person in Colorado, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Authorities report at least 49 people have contracted the illness across 10 states, four of whom live in Utah. One older patient died in Colorado and ten other patients were hospitalized — with one person developing a severe condition called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

The CDC has linked the illnesses to Quarter Pounder hamburgers from McDonald’s.
Investigators are still looking into which ingredient is causing the illness, and McDonald’s has stopped serving slivered onions and quarter-pound beef patties in multiple states due to the outbreak.
Illnesses are reported in Utah, Colorado, Oregon, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Colorado has the most reported cases, with 26 people having been infected.
Symptoms of E. coli infection may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. According to the CDC, in severe cases, it can lead to kidney failure, especially among young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek medical attention.
