Mother charged with murder in 1-year-old daughter’s death in Humboldt Park

A Humboldt Park woman has been charged with murder in connection with her 1-year-old daughter’s death last month at their home.

The girl, identified as Lucia Vazquez, died of asphyxiation and assault around 9 a.m. Dec. 20 at her home in the 500 block of North Springfield Avenue, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Officers were called to the home that morning for a reported death investigation where they found Marisol Vazquez, 37, sitting on a bed with her unresponsive daughter behind her, court documents said. Officers performed life-saving measures on the child before she was pronounced dead.

The bathtub at the home was discovered full of water, the drain clogged with clothes, documents said.

Vazquez was making incoherent statements to officers and was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for a mental health evaluation. She later told a detective she suffocated her child with a bed sheet and tried to drown herself in the bathtub, according to court documents.

Vazquez was arrested Thursday at the hospital, police said, and she faces one felony count of first-degree murder.

A judge ordered her detained pending trial during a court hearing Saturday. Her next court date was scheduled for Tuesday.
