This might just be the anthem for raging down the 347. A new rock song called “Call My Name” by the Maricopa band Endless May hit streaming services this month.
It’s written and composed by Maricopa residents Matthew Mitchell, Darrel Hartman and Mark Kear, with Tucson vocalist “Junebug” – the groups “resident badass” – at the helm.
The sound is somewhere between synthy alt rock and intricate rock ballads.
The foursome started as a cover band but decided a year ago to release their own material.
“Endless May was sort of a feeling we got,” said Kear. “Everything just felt right when we all got together and started writing and making our own stuff, it was just a really good feeling. It’s family, basically.”
The creative process is one the bandmates take seriously. The group gets together and collaborates on the lyrics and music.
“Typically, someone comes in with an idea [for] a riff or a lyric, or even sometimes a full song, and then we sit there, we work it out,” said Kear.
The band released “Call My Name” on Jan. 3 and are working on finding audiences online and at more live shows. Gone are the days of a new band relying on labels to push their music. It has to happen organically, which requires a lot more work from the band itself.
“It’s a lot harder to find shows, and it’s a lot harder to get your name out there. When you played in a cover band, you can make one phone call to a bar and get on their schedule, versus when you’re playing original music and you’re only playing a 45 minute set or an hour long set, you have to team up with other bands,” said Mitchell. “You got to find the right mix.”
The Maricopa members of Endless May all work together as construction inspectors for Phoenix-based Consor. They are planning to lay down some more tracks and release more music later this year.
“We’re trying to get back in the studio, hopefully in the next month or so, and we would like to have more music released the next couple of months,” said Kear.
