Man arrested after police chase in Salt Lake City ends in crash on 3900 South

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC4) — A man has been arrested by South Salt Lake Police and faces several charges that stem from a crash that happened on 3900 South at the State Street intersection.

Suspect arrested after robbing convenience store in Glendale neighborhood

Lutolofi Marcel Maama, 27, faces the following charges:

Assault on a peace officer/military force that produces death/injury

Receive or transfer of stolen vehicle

Fail to stop at command of law enforcement

Failure to stop or respond at the command of police

Providing peace officer false personal information — actual person

Possession of a controlled substance schedule I/II/analog

Failure to remain at accident involving injury

Negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury

DUI — first offense in ten years

Driving on denied license

Use or possession of drug paraphernalia

Failure to comply duties at vehicle accident/property damage

Officers observed a stolen Chevrolet pickup truck pull into a parking lot near 4000 S. Main Street. Police believe Maama to have been the driver. He reportedly put the truck into reverse and headed north toward 3900 South and State Street where he ran a red light and crashed into a Nissan Rogue. The driver of that Nissan Rogue was injured and taken to a local hospital for those injuries.

Maama fled the vehicle and ran from the scene on foot, before police eventually took him into custody not far from the scene of the crash. Police found his license to be revoked.

Maama told police that he had used fentanyl and methamphetamine and that he had fentanyl on his person. He also allegedly told police that he knew the truck was stolen.

Maama was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on the aforementioned charges.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
