WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – SCOPE Center receptionist Carol Bovee enjoys crocheting.
“I tell people it keeps me out of the kitchen,” she said, laughing.
Bovee said her late sister-in-law taught her how to make something out of nothing. She loves transforming an old piece of yarn or plastic into something that makes her proud.
A few years ago, she learned how to transform plastic shopping bags into mats for the homeless to lay on or use to stay warm and dry. She has been working on this project ever since.
“I can’t even count how many I’ve made, um, I’ve got to be making hundreds probably, you know, because as soon as I make ’em, I give them away,” she said.
She said the project has two benefits.
“It keeps this plastic out of the landfills, and it puts a use for them, too,” she said.
Bovee now wants to teach others this useful skill. She is hoping to hold a free class next month.
“It gives you something to do without being bored at home, and yet, you’re doing a good deed at the time,” Bovee said.
The finished product will help someone in need.
“The Housing Collaborative has contacted us. They would like to have some to give out to the homeless. My boss… wants to give some out and stuff so we have people that are asking for them,” she said.
Bovee says if you’re interested in taking her class, just give the SCOPE Center in Warren a call at 330-399-8846.
The class itself is free, but participants will need to bring plastic bags and a 16-mm crochet hook.
