Local roundup: Hazleton Area girls rout Coatesville to remain undefeated

Kaitlyn Bindas scored 27 points as the Hazleton Area girls basketball team continued its dominant start to the season, rolling through Coatesville Area High School 82-49 on Saturday.

In total, five Cougars reached double figures: Sophia Benyo finished with 13 points while Mariah Marolo, Alexis Reimold and Sophia Shults added 12 points each.

The Cougars improved to 13-0 overall on the year with the non-league victory.

Dallas 62, Pocono Mountain West 43

Odessa Kanton continued her impressive freshman season with a game-high 23 points as Dallas picked up a non-league victory.

Mia DelGaudio finished with 13 points and Caitlyn Mizzer added 10 points for Dallas.

Tunkhannock 38, Wyoming Area 30

Laurianna Alston led all scorers with 17 points in a Tunkhannock win over Wyoming Area.

Erin Van Ness added 14 points for the Tigers.

Addison Gaylord and Aminah Dixon each had six points to lead Wyoming Area.

Wyoming Seminary 54, Susquehanna 19

Ella Stambaugh scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the first half to lead Wyoming Seminary past Susquehanna.

Avery Luksic added 10 points for the Blue Knights.

Allentown Dieruff 54, Berwick 42

Berwick couldn’t keep up with Dieruff High School, dropping the non-league contest.

Abby Calarco was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 21 points. Carly Post chipped in 13 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

MMI Prep 46, Lourdes Regional 41

MMI Prep scored 36 of its 46 total points in the second half to pull away from Lourdes Regional.

Nate Kringe led all scorers with 17 points, and Nick Pantages added 12 points for the Preppers.

BOYS WRESTLING

Berwick 41, North Pocono 30

Hosting the Berwick Duals on Saturday, the Bulldogs recorded five pins and a tech fall to beat North Pocono.

Conner Roberts, Brett Knorr, Skyler Nevel, Francis Yosh and Carmen Malt picked up the pinfalls for Berwick, while Sawyer Keller won a tech fall at 133 pounds and Misael Rivera won by forfeit at 107.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Wallenpaupack 48, Hanover Area 24

Wallenpaupack was aided by a string of forfeits in a win over Hanover Area.

Santina Saraka, Kaidence Ankner, Lekayla Constantine and Claire Gyle all picked up pinfall wins for Hanover Area.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Stevens 64, Misericordia 62

A Stevens buzzer-beater sank Misericordia, dropping the Cougars to 0-2 in the MAC Freedom.

Matt Prociak had 21 points and 11 boards for the Cougars. Kevin Lazdowsky and Jack Gallagher added 16 and 13 points, respectively.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Stevens 48, Misericordia 39

A low-scoring game went the way of Stevens, handing the Cougars their first conference loss of the season.

Emily Romanowski was the only Misericordia player to reach double figures, leading the team with 10 points.

MEN’S HOCKEY

New England 7, Wilkes 2

A battle of two nationally-ranked teams saw Wilkes come up on the wrong end of a loss.

Max Cocchi and Lorenzo Marcolin scored for the Colonels.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Wilkes 3, Arcadia 2

The Colonels finished up a weekend sweep of Arcadia, and have taken over sole possession of first place in the MAC with the win.

Renee Ng, Iida Laitinen and Megan Bell scored a goal each for Wilkes, who trailed 2-1 heading into the final period but rallied for the win.

Delaware Valley 4, King’s 0

The Monarchs were shut out at home, dropping the second game of a weekend series with Delaware Valley.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Misericordia splits

The Cougars, ranked 14th in the nation, opened up the season by splitting a pair of matches at the SUNY-Poly Invitational.

Misericordia beat Buffalo State 3-1 in the opener before losing to Lasell 3-1 in the nightcap.

Jared Piontkowski led the Cougars with 18 kills in the opener while Anthony DePalma added 12 kills and five aces.

Elmira 3, Wilkes 1

The Colonels fell behind two sets to none before ultimately falling in four sets to Elmira College.

Elmira took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22 before Wilkes avoided the sweep with a 25-22 win in the third. Elmira took the fourth set 25-22 to win the match.

WRESTLING

Wilkes finishes 7th at Budd Whitehill Duals

The Colonels split a pair of duals, losing to Stevens before rallying to take down Messiah College at Lycoming College’s Budd Whitehill Duals.

Connor Kerwin, Michael Richardson, Ryan Santiago and Caleb Burkhart each won two matches for Wilkes.
