How to take care of your skin in colder weather

(WKBN) — It wouldn’t be winter without dry skin and chapped lips. But what if there were simple steps you could be taking at home to help aid the problem?

The winter season comes with its own list of inconveniences, and on top of that, it leaves many of us with dry and uncomfortable skin. You’re not alone.

It’s probably time to winterize your skincare routine.

“Definitely moisturize using a lot,” Mia Odom with AG Beauty Salon said. “That’s probably the big thing.”

And not only is the moisturizer important, but dermatologists say it’s important to buy the right ones when at the store.

“When you’re at the drugstore and looking for a moisturizer, grab one that’s thicker,” Doctor Jennifer Lucas with the Cleveland Clinic said. “Look for a cream or even petroleum jelly; it’s something that’s real greasy for the nighttime.”

Another big thing is protecting your skin from the sun, which is still essential even when we can’t see the sun shining.

“The sun is always out there, and even though it’s cold, it doesn’t mean that it’s not hitting your skin, especially as it’s winter and the snow is falling,” Lucas said. “It will reflect off the snow and you get not only sun coming from above, but below as well.”

And as we begin 2025, your New Year resolution may be improving self care. Winterizing your skincare could mean seeking a professional for some self care and relaxation.

“I would recommend getting facials once a month or once every couple of months just to take care of your skin more and you could relax and have someone else do it for you,” Odom said.

Odom says you can find many products she uses in stores and can help answer questions based on your skin type.

As for everyone, Odom’s advice is this:

“Hydrate your skin… all year round,” Odom said. “It’s just really nice to have good hydrated skin.”
