Four new members of the Pike County Memorial Hall of Heroes will be honored at a special ceremony set for 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at Zebulon City Hall. American Legion Post 197 will honor the 2024 inductees, including Pike County Sheriff’s Office Walter E. Carter, Army Private Ernest C. Ross from WWI, Navy Chief Petty Officer Harvey L. Pike from WWII and Army Sergeant Cebran E. Willis from WWII.
Highlights of the program will include a brief history of the Memorial Hall of Heroes, biography readings of the four inductees and the unveiling of each inductee’s shadow box, with Amazing Grace and Taps played in honor of the four inductees.
“Since the ceremony is being held on the 83rd anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor and one of the inductees, Harvey Pike, was killed in action on board the USS Arizona, the theme for this year’s program is ‘7 December 1941, a date which will live in infamy.’ The Pike County community is invited to attend this ceremony in honor of these four heroes, and increase their knowledge of Pike County, law enforcement, and military history,” said Post 197’s Bryan Richardson.
The Memorial Hall of Heroes Class of 2024 will join 41 previous inductees. A reception in the Pike County Memorial Hall of Heroes will follow the ceremony. Attendees will be able to view all 45 current and previous inductee shadow boxes. The Pike County Memorial Hall of Heroes is open to the public when the Zebulon City Hall is open.
“The public is encouraged to check out this amazing museum of Pike County history,” said Richardson.
