KINGSTON — Susquehanna’s 40-14 victory over Holy Redeemer on a hot Saturday afternoon left both football teams seeking some solutions.
For Redeemer, which fell to 0-4 and lost its 15th consecutive game, it was starting off better.
“We have do a better job playing football out of the gate,” Redeemer coach Tyson Kelley said. “We made too many mistakes in the first quarter. For us, our guys have to show up ready to play football. We’ve really slept-walked in the first quarter the first four weeks this year.
“But what I will say is these guys do play hard. They don’t quit, and I think we’re starting to find out how to use our guys.”
Susquehanna improved to 3-1, using the running of quarterback Weston Yannone and running back William Marcy to build a 34-0 halftime lead. However, there were flaws needing repair as the Sabers head into their Lackawanna Conference Division 3 schedule.
“We didn’t focus as well as I’d like to,” Susquehanna coach Moses Perry said. “We made too many mistakes. Mistakes have always been our biggest downfall. I’d have to look at it and see how many, but it was too many.”
Susquehanna scored on its first possession of the game on a 3-yard run by Marcy, who finished with 97 yards on five carries. All came in the first half.
But one of the mistakes Perry might see on tape is the tackling on Redeemer’s first possession. Receiver Kyaire McLain took a short pass from Thomas Dugan and pinballed off a few tackle attempts for a 43-yard gain. The Royals advanced to the Susquehanna 30-yard line, but an interception ended the drive.
Redeemer’s offense didn’t do much the rest of the half as Susquehanna scored on its next four possessions.
Yannone, who finished with 117 yard rushing on five carries, had a 66-yard TD run and Marcy followed with a 39-yard TD run for a 20-0 lead after one quarter.
Yannone hasn’t thrown much this season, but he connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass to Mason Keyes early in the second quarter. His 31-yard toss to tight end Rykin Hobart set up a 1-yard scoring run by Marcy as the Sabers led 34-0 at intermission.
Redeemer scored its touchdowns in the fourth quarter as freshman quarterback Brady McDermott threw touchdown passes of 46 yards to Mike Zbierski and 25 yards to McLain.
