Five family pets perished in a fire on Sept. 3 at 327 East North St. in Roodhouse.
The Roodhouse Fire Department was called out around 3:30 p.m. for a fully involved structure fire. The owner of the home, who is in a wheelchair, was home at the time of the blaze sitting on the porch.
A neighbor noticed the fire in the front part of the house and went over to help the owner out of the home. Before they could get her out, she became overcome by smoke and had to be treated at the scene by emergency personnel
Roodhouse Fire Chief Terry Hopkins is currently on medical leave, so Carrollton Fire Chief Tim Thaxton and White Hall Fire Chief Cale Hoesman took over in his absence.
Hoesman said they are not sure what caused the blaze, but it appears to have started in the front part of the house. The fire is under investigation.
The Roodhouse Fire Department was assisted by White Hall and Carrollton and Greene County Ambulance. They were on the scene until approximately 6:45 p.m.
Of the six pets who resided in the home, only one pet was saved.
