It’s been a week full of excitement for the Illini, and junior outside linebacker Gabe Jacas added to the excitement on Jan. 6. Jacas declared on X that he will return to Illinois for another season with the caption, “One last ride Illini Nation! Love you guys.”
After Jacas’ success this season, questions remained unanswered about whether he’d declare for the 2025 NFL draft or stay with the Illini. But the answers are clear now, especially with the vital returns of junior defensive back Xavier Scott and senior offensive lineman J.C. Davis. With these pieces coming back, Illinois has a nearly complete squad for next season, and its 2025 campaign continues to appear more promising every day.
Jacas was one of the most ferocious members of Illinois’ defensive unit this season. He finished 2024 with 38 solo tackles, 13 tackles for loss, eight sacks and three forced fumbles.
At 6-foot-3 and 275 pounds, Jacas plays with a purpose and always comes out attacking. He catches the quarterback when they least expect it and never fails to hit hard and fast. He’s exactly the kind of guy the Illini needed this year, and he’s exactly what they need next season.
His impressive season landed him No. 5 in tackles for loss in the Big Ten and placed him in the Phil Steele All-America Third Team. Additionally, he ranked No. 2 overall on the team in tackles and landed on the 2025 Senior Bowl Watch List.
His aggression and passion on the field have gotten attention from countless individuals in the football world. If next season is anything like 2024’s, opponents must keep a keen eye on Jacas and his attacks.
