Former El Dorado mayor arrested, accused of embezzling more than $20K from nonprofit

EL DORADO, Ark. – The former mayor of a south Arkansas town is facing a charge of theft, according to the office of Attorney General Tim Griffin.

In a release sent Tuesday afternoon, Griffin said agents arrested former El Dorado Mayor Veronica Creer Tuesday afternoon on a charge of theft of property.

According to the release, Creer closed out the bank account of the nonprofit El Dorado Crime Stoppers in October of 2023, an organization in which she had previously served as a board member.

The release states Creer withdrew $23,544 in the form of a cashier’s check and, a few months later, the check was redirected to another nonprofit, Parents United Against Youth Violence.

Griffin said Creer has not been an active member of the El Dorado Crime Stoppers’ board since 2016, but she was still listed as a signatory on the organization’s bank account.

Upon learning of the alleged theft, Griffin said the El Dorado Police Department notified 13th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Jeff Rogers who then asked the attorney general’s office to investigate.

“I appreciate the work done on this case by my office and the El Dorado Police Department, and the cooperation of Prosecuting Attorney Rogers,” Griffin said. “We are all equal under the law, and I will continue to enforce the law.”
