WILKES-BARRE — City police detectives added assault and drunken driving offenses against the driver accused of leaving the scene after allegedly striking a 13-year-old boy in the parking lot of Kirby Park last month.
Shahiyd Deen, 28, of North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, learned Wednesday he is facing felony charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving personal injury and misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, tampering with evidence, false reports, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
Deen was initially charged with a single count of accidents involving personal injury until police filed the additional charges Wednesday.
Court records say Deen struck Elijah Haney, of Kingston, in the parking lot of Kirby Park on Aug. 5. Haney, who was riding a bicycle, was critically injured and suffered a fractured skull, multiple broken bones and internal injuries.
Haney spent four weeks at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and released Tuesday.
After allegedly striking Haney, Deen reported his vehicle, a 2018 Hyundai Elantra, stolen.
Police in Wilkes-Barre and Kingston located Deen’s vehicle behind 362 Market St., Kingston, with damage to its windshield, a flat tire and a dent in the hood, court records say.
Police detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on Deen, who refused to submit to a blood test at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre, according to court records.
Haney’s friend who was also riding a bicycle, court records say, they heard a car doing “burn outs” in the parking lot prior to Haney being struck.
A week before the incident at Kirby Park, Edwardsville police allege Deen was traveling at a high rate of speed in the Hyundai and struck a parked vehicle in the Eagle Ridge apartment complex on July 29.
Deen told police in Edwardsville his sister was driving the Hyundai, which she denied, court records say.
Edwardsville police charged Deen with driving under the influence and careless driving after a blood test showed he had an alcohol level of .24 percent after the crash in the apartment complex parking lot.
Deens remains jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility.
