DA hoping to quickly indict Masonville man who murdered pregnant wife

DELAWARE COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is looking to convene an emergency grand jury session in order to secure indictments against a Masonville man for allegedly stabbing his pregnant wife to death.

The New York State Police held a news conference today at Troop C headquarters in Sidney to release additional details about the arrest of 32-year-old Drew Garnier.

Police say Garnier fatally stabbed his 29-year-old wife Samantha Garnier and also stabbed their two daughters, ages 6 and 9, seriously injuring them.

Samantha Garnier was airlifted to Wilson Hospital where she later died.

Both children are being treated at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and are expected to make a full recovery.

Major Lucas Shuta is Troop C Commander.

“Family members have arrived from outside of the area and will be caring for the girls upon their release from the hospital. The State Police would like to extend our condolences to the family and would also like to thank all of the first responders who assisted at this horrible scene,” said Shuta.

Drew Garnier was arrested at the scene and taken to AO Fox Hospital for treatment of minor superficial wounds he received during the alleged assaults. He is now in the Delaware County Jail with no bail.

Samantha Garnier was five months pregnant when she died.

District Attorney Shawn Smith was asked whether that might lead to a second murder charge.

“The short answer is no, it’s not. We’re going to look into see if there are charges, we can bring then certainly we will. But, no it’s not like you may think or want. No, it’s not two murders because the child passed away,” said Smith.

Smith says a felony hearing for Garnier is scheduled for next Wednesday but that he plans to seek a grand jury indictment before then.

State Police charged Garnier with murder and two counts of attempted murder.
