The Warrior Run fire hall was filled to the brim this past Sunday as community members turned out in droves despite the snowy weather to support a local commissioner as he recovers from a recent illness.
The benefit, filled with food, entertainment and raffle prizes, was held in honor of Hanover Township Commissioner Joe Howanitz, 72.
“There had to be at least 200 people there and all the sponsors that donated businesses,” said his son, Jeff Howanitz, following the benefit. “It was a huge success.”
For roughly eight months, Howanitz, an active member of the Men’s Club of Exaltation of the Holy Cross Parish and Amvets Post 59, has been in recovery following a stroke of the spine that ultimately left him paralyzed.
“There were a few other complications that came along with it and it set him back and everything,” Jeff said.
Funds raised from the event through raffle baskets, 50/50, admission tickets and various sponsorships will go toward helping to provide Howanitz with the longtime care he will need moving forward.
“This will help with what he may or may not need that’s not covered from insurance and give him a pretty good fighting chance to get back to a somewhat normal life,” his son said.
Jeff said his father was emotional and thankful to everyone who came out to support him. He was equally thankful to share some pizza and beer with his friends and family for the first time in a while.
“We set him up a spot in the corner to watch the Eagles game, and he talked to everybody, so he was super exhausted afterward,” Jeff laughed. “But he was happy.”
Despite his recent medical issues, Howanitz has continued to attend Hanover Township meetings virtually. Jeff said he’s optimistic that since his father has gotten healthier, he will be able to attend meetings in person again starting next month.
Jeff was grateful to all of the community members and small business owners who made the fundraiser such a success.
“It was a really special day for my dad.”
