Cassville firefighters to climb in memory of 9/11

On Sept. 21, firefighters and civilians from all over will be joining in person and virtually for the Springfield Area Memorial Stair Climb. in remembrance of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

The entire community is invited to Hammons Field for our 12th annual event. The Memorial Stair Climb is a commemorative climb to honor the 343 members of the Fire Department of New York who died on 9/11.

The event starts at 8:30 am at Hammons Field on Sept. 21. More than 343 participants — including members of the Cassville Volunteer Fire Protection District returning to the event — will climb the stairs of Hammons Field multiple times for a total of 110 stories, representing the number of floors in the World Trade Center Towers. As part of registration, the participants are asked to raise other funds for Supporting Heroes, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Sunshine Brotherhood. Last year, registered climbers raised over $40,000 for the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation.

All proceeds from the registration fees and fundraising donations will be divided among three nonprofit charities. These charities support the families of the 343 + who were directly affected on Sept. 11, 2001, and the first responders & families of those who serve in our local communities, suffering the same fate.

These charities include the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Supporting Heroes, and Sunshine Brotherhood Foundation.

“We invite you to join us,” said Julie Mercer, marketing coordinator for the event. “I promise you it will be a very moving experience.”

New this year, participants have had the opportunity to participate in three Missouri-based stair climbs. The Clayton 9/11 Stair Climb was on Sept. 8, the Springfield Memorial Stair Climb is on Sept. 21, and the Missouri 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Jefferson City is on Oct. 5, 2024.

All funds raised will be distributed to the respective charities supported by each of these climbs.
