Cancer deaths decreasing, but cancer cases increasing

(WYTV) – We are dying less and less of cancer in this country.

We’ve seen cancer deaths cut by a third in the last 30 years — that’s good.

But at the same time, we’ve seen another trend — more women and young adults are developing cancers. We’re not sure why.

Is there anything we can do to reverse this trend? Yes.

“Even though we’ve made progress, we can make even more progress if people do lifestyle modifications that can decrease their risk for cancer. That would be stopping smoking, minimizing alcohol exposure, getting screenings when appropriate, follow up with your doctor if there’s symptoms for earlier detection and minimizing obesity,” said Dr. Dale Shepard, an oncologist.

A new report says lung cancer cases are now higher in women than in men younger than 65.

Pancreatic cancer remains the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths with a poor survival rate. There is no early screening available for pancreatic cancer and the treatment options are limited.
