CALHOUN: Calhoun school board agrees to cooperative for clay target league

By Steven Spencer

The Calhoun Unit 40 School Board approved a State High School Clay Target League Cooperative Agreement at their board meeting last Tuesday.
Athletic Director Cheri Burris said that there are students interested in joining from Pikeland and Pleasant Hill.
Burris said the athletic directors for Pikeland and Pleasant Hill were talking to their school boards about the possibility of joining the co-op and finding out how many students are interested.
Superintendent Lori Young said that she also spoke with the other superintendents and they are all interested. Young said that there was a previous co-op agreement and adding the other schools shouldn’t be an issue.
“With trap you can go within the region,” Young said. “It doesn’t affect our kids in any way whatsoever.”
Young suggested doing a two year co-op agreement so that the board doesn’t need to review every year.
“Once we agree with the initial co-op, because they would be using the Calhoun name, then I would send it out to all of the other superintendents to sign off on everything,” Young said. “I’ve reached out to all of them, and I know that Cheri has talked to the athletic directors so everybody is pretty much on board. And it’s just the use of our name so that they can organize.”
Young said the other schools are excited to be able to join, and with a bigger team the students can compete at higher levels in state and national competitions.
The co-op will include Calhoun, Brussels, St. Norbert, St. Mary, Pikeland and Pleasant Hill.
Burris also provided numbers for Brussels participation for co-ops for fall sports. There was one for football, seven for volleyball, five for junior high softball, one junior high for baseball and two for junior high girls basketball.
Young also said there will be a brief public hearing before the next school board meeting. The day scheduled for return after winter break was supposed to be a teacher institute day. Rather than adding a day to the end of the year, Young said staff could come in on Casimir Pulaski Day to make up the in-service day on Monday, March 3.
