January 2025 was one for the record books for the south. From snow in rare places to bitter cold all in just a few weeks. Let’s take a quick look back at some of the events that occurred during this wild month of weather.
Major Snowstorm Hits Arkansas
January 9-10 brought a massive winter storm, covering much of Arkansas in snow and ice. A storm system pushed moisture into cold air, leading to heavy snowfall in most of the state with ice in the south.

Briggsville & Mena: 14 inches
Potter Junction & Lake Hamilton: 13 inches
Hot Springs, Mount Ida, & Rover: 11-12 inches
Perryville & Silver: 12 inches
Roads became treacherous, with a major accident on I-30 near Malvern causing hours of standstill traffic.
Southern Arkansas Ice
In southern Arkansas, freezing rain created hazardous conditions, with over a quarter-inch of ice reported in cities like Ashdown, Magnolia, and Prescott, causing power outages across the region.
Another Arctic Blast & Gulf Coast Snowstorm
Just days later, a powerful Arctic blast (January 18-21) sent temperatures plunging and brought another round of snow to Arkansas and the Deep South. Cities like New Orleans (8 inches) and Pensacola (8.9 inches) shattered snow records, while Arkansas saw single-digit lows:
