Around Town: Bundle up and head to Marie’s Diner in Duryea!

Whew.

What a week it’s been.

If you’re like me, you’ve returned to a somewhat normal routine after the holidays. It’s comforting.

Part of that normal routine the past few months — for me — has been stopping at Marie’s Diner in Duryea after Mass on Sundays.

We don’t stop every Sunday, but when we do, we’re always glad we did. When considering where to go for Sunday breakfast or lunch, Marie’s is almost always on the list these days.

If you’re from Wilkes-Barre or further south in Luzerne County, maybe you’ve never heard of it, but it’s a lovely little country-style, quaint restaurant on McAlpine Street in Duryea that is open for breakfast and lunch every day starting at 6 a.m. (7 a.m. on Sundays).

There are so many food options (traditional breakfasts, sandwiches, soups), but it’s also just a cozy atmosphere with a claw-toy machine and seasonal decorations.

On a recent visit, I found the holiday décor charming. One Christmas tree was dressed in ribbon and glitter with a sack of presents beside it and an elf on a ladder. I couldn’t help but snap a photo.

Besides the breakfast, the atmosphere and the friendliness of the workers make it a great way to start (or continue) the day.

I love the description on Marie’s Facebook page, too. It says “If you are in the mood for breakfast, lunch or just a coffee….come to Marie’s Diner where we give service with a SMILE :).”

I have found that to be true.

As you can see, while the weather has been brutally cold recently, I haven’t let that deter from my regular travels around town.

One clothing item I’m grateful to have is my North Face jacket, which is lightweight but has a lining on the inside that keeps me toasty.

I bought it on a whim before the holidays at Top of the Slope Ski Shop in Downtown Wilkes-Barre, and it’s come in handy.

I wore it almost every day last week and while everyone else was complaining about the cold, I felt toasty. No wonder skiers and outdoorsy types wear this jacket brand year after year.

Whatever you do this upcoming week, stay warm.

Maybe I’ll see you somewhere around town, despite the cold conditions. Bundle up.
