After primary loss, Cavanaugh hatches new plan to appear on November ballot

Kevin Cavanaugh has given up screaming rigged election fodder into the void and devised a new plan to ensure he’s on the general election ballot in November, despite his loss in the primary one month ago.

The Maricopa supervisor-slash-former sheriff candidate had officially thrown his hat in the general election ring today as a write-in candidate for county recorder against his arch-rival, the incumbent Dana Lewis.

Pinal County Communications Director James Daniels confirmed this afternoon Cavanaugh emailed the elections office his intention to run. He also submitted a statement of interest and a write-in nomination form.

InMaricopa contacted Cavanaugh for comment today.

The soon-to-be-ex-supe spent the past year sowing election doubts and attempting to get Lewis fired. Most recently, he cited “mathematical problems and statistical problems” in several county races, including in his own sheriff bid, dubbing the election results “statistically impossible.”

Cavanaugh not only broached the issue in two recent board meetings, but also released a 21-page document that does its darndest to back up his claims of rigging and “changing vote totals.”

He hinted that a second such document is in the works during Monday’s board of supervisors meeting.

“Once our report is finished, I will be traveling to show people the problems we found in the primary throughout the district,” Cavanaugh said. “Folks can challenge me on the math, challenge me on anything, but I want to show you how we arrived at the conclusion we did.”

District 4 Supervisor Jeff McClure appeared willing to get that challenge started.

“I suggest the board direct staff to work with [the] elections department and with outside counsel to review the methodology and analytics the supervisor used to reach his conclusions and also to have a forensic audit done of the technology utilized in the primary to determine if there’s any validity to what the supervisor’s alleging,” McClure said.
