SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! High pressure in place this morning is shifting east throughout the afternoon, and a storm system along the coast is ushering moisture into the state this evening through Friday. High clouds are already moving in, and we’ll see an increase in southwest winds later today as the system gets closer.
That said, the storm weakens as it moves inland, and most of the moisture gets stuck on the other side of the Sierra Nevada. Snowfall tonight into Friday looks light, with only a dusting to about 1 inch along the Wasatch Front — maybe enough to make roads slick for the Friday morning commute. The mountains could pick up 1 to 3 inches before a ridge settles back in Friday night.
A ridge will bring a quiet start to Saturday, but clouds will increase as a new trough inches closer. Temperatures will stay warmer than usual for December. Precipitation ramps up Saturday night into Sunday morning as the storm moves through.
Early snow totals are estimated to be 4 to 10 inches in the northern mountains, with higher peaks getting up to 14 inches. Lower elevations probably won’t see much, if any, snow. Impacts will mostly affect mountain travel and passes.
After this system, there’s a quick lull on Monday before another weaker storm rolls through Tuesday into early Wednesday. This one looks much drier, with just a small chance of mountain snow. By midweek, a stronger ridge builds in, bringing dry, warmer weather, but it could also trap haze in northern valleys due to inversions.
