A Maricopa AutoZone staffer accused of defrauding his employer told police he organized the scheme because he needed extra cash to pay rent on his apartment.
Maricopa Police Department received a call from AutoZone Divisional Investigator Keith Ridenour, who alleged an employee at AutoZone’s second Maricopa location, at The Wells shopping center, had stolen $2,372 from the store and admitted to it in a phone interview.
Ridenour told officers that Jorge-Leonel Mendez, 33, processed several car battery warranty returns during November, December and early this month.
Mendez admitted to processing “nine or ten” fraudulent returns on batteries and kept the money to pay rent.
Police on Friday filed one felony charge of theft against Mendez. If convicted, he faces more than two years in prison.
