Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA gym renovation project completed

WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA recently installed additional basketball hoops, safety padding behind the backboards and had the floor of its Frank and Dorthy Henry Gymnasium resurfaced.

The renovation project was in anticipation of the start of its expanding youth basketball league — My Sky Elite Winter Youth Basketball. The program was spearheaded by the executive director of the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, Doug Miller.

”My passion and experience in youth basketball, combined with the funding we received for this project, made this a perfect fit for the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA,” said Miller. “We started the program in 2024 with 225 players, this year we’re looking to add an additional 50 players. The goal is to get as many area kids into the program as possible.”

Funding for this project came from the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) and the DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation.

The My Sky Elite Winter Youth Basketball program at the Wilkes-Barre YMCA is open to boys and girls from Pre-K through sixth grade. The program combines skill-building, teamwork and fun. Currently in session, the league runs through March 8. Games begin on Saturdays starting Jan. 18.
