About a than a month into his role as acting mayor in Luzerne Borough, Ron Reino said he hasn’t yet decided if he wants to run in this year’s municipal election.
“It’s definitely something that I’m open to,” he said in a recent interview with the Times Leader.
Reino, a Democrat, is set to serve out the remainder of this year’s term, with the opportunity to run in the May primary, ahead of the November election.
He was appointed to the position in December, following the passing of longtime borough mayor James Kellar, who was in the middle of his sixth term.
“I think, after talking to some people, my background allowed me to do a quick transition to at least fill the acting role,” Reino said of his decision to take up the mantel.
He served as acting mayor in 2001 and was on borough council from 2002 until 2005.
Reino said he already has “some irons in the fire,” including plans to bring back the borough’s Memorial Day service in May. He is also working closely with the Lions Club and the Luzerne Merchant’s Association.
“I have a good relationship with the council members as well, so it’s easy to have an open discussion with them,” he said.
In a recent Facebook post, Reino introduced himself as mayor and wrote, “As a town, we will continue to strive for good communications, constructive community events, and optimism.”
In addition to his duties as acting mayor, Reino also serves as a radio disc jockey on the weekends for Rock 107.
