Wellness Wednesday: Chana Masala

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Make a Chana Masala with onions, ginger, turmeric, tomatoes and more fresh ingredients.

Ingredients 

1 cup chickpeas (chana), soaked overnight and drained

2 medium onions, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 medium ginger, grated

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp coriander powder

1 tsp garam masala

1/2 tsp turmeric

1/2 tsp red chili powder (optional)

Salt, to taste

2 tbsp vegetable oil or olive oil

2 medium tomatoes, chopped (or 1 can crushed tomatoes)

Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

1. Heat oil, add cumin seeds, let sizzle.
2. Add onions, cook until translucent.
3. Add garlic, ginger, and cook for 1 minute.
4. Mix in spices (coriander, garam masala, turmeric, chili powder).
5. Add chickpeas, cook 2-3 minutes.
6. Add chopped tomatoes (or crushed tomatoes), salt, and stir.
7. Reduce heat, simmer for 15-20 minutes or until chickpeas are tender.
9. Garnish with cilantro
