BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The island of Neverland is coming to life at the Discovery Center, starting today, with a towering pirate ship playground.
The Discovery Center unveiled its newest expansion to the outdoor story garden. It’s a pirate ship playground with all the bells and whistles, including a working steering wheel, a treasure map, cannons, a brig, and more.
The Discovery Center held an unveiling ceremony on Tuesday and watched as the first young pirates climbed aboard and set sail.
The expansion is revitalizing the old basketball court area and turning it into Neverland from Peter Pan.
The executive director, Brenda Myers says having a theme lets the kids’ imaginations run wild.
“The narrative of play sounds so different. You take on a character, you take on a role. You have a conversation that says ‘oh, what does a pirate say?’ And then the games begin and soon, as you envision, you’ll see a treasure chest, you’ll see Captain Hook’s pet alligator. maybe even Peter Pan’s house,” said Myers.
The pirate ship is just part one of the three phase expansion that will include treasure chests, a dinghy, Peter Pan’s house, a bridge, and benches.
