A man stabbed and a child shot in Homestead last week.
That has a lot of residents running angry and scared. Maybe even the homeowners association feels the same, but it has little to do with fighting crime, other than maybe promoting a block watch.
Instead, big on the Homestead South’s HOA house-policing agenda? Denying a little free library proposed by one neighbor in the spirit of a friendly exchange of books with her Homestead neighbors.
That has Anjelic Garza, who proposed it in front of her home, ready to throw the book at the HOA.
So why would such a popular community-oriented idea be rejected?
“The board denied this as it could be added so that the entire community would be able to have access to it,” said Jennifer Jenkins, responding to Garza’s proposal on behalf of the Homestead South Homeowners Association.
She did not explain which people would not have access to the unlocked, roadside box containing free books, leading many to scratch their heads in disbelief and frustration.
“They obviously don’t know what a free library is if they don’t think it’s for the entire community. So ridiculous,” said Homestead neighbor Adriana Holmes.
LittleFreeLibrary.org is a nonprofit intended to help build community and expand book access through a global network of little libraries. More than 175,000 have been installed in front yards around the world.
Little Free Libraries, essentially a sidewalk book exchange, can be found in neighborhoods around Maricopa such as this one in Alterra.
“Our HOA can be extremely difficult to communicate with. I don’t know why people can put up political signs and flags but you couldn’t put some books out for people to give and take,” said Homesteader Erin Kisicki. She agreed with Holmes: “Pretty ridiculous.”
