Woman and baby shot in Boston; police searching for gunman

A baby and a woman were shot late Monday night in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, and the search is on for the gunman who got away,

Boston police say they responded around 11:39 p.m. to the scene where Ames Street meets Stratton Street — not far from Harambee Park — after a Shot Spotter alert and 911 calls for a report of a baby shot.

Once on scene, officers found an adult female and a baby with gunshot wounds in a driveway, with an outside crime scene, police say.

Both victims were taken to local hospitals where the baby is fighting for their life. The woman is expected to be OK, police say.

“This is a pretty heinous act in general, pretty cowardly,” Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said early Tuesday. “I can’t think of any reason why somebody would shoot both a female and a young child for any reason, so we really need the public’s help and support on this one.”

Police haven’t said how, if at all, the two victims are related, or if the suspected shooter is known to them.

No arrests have been made.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene, as did trauma teams, and police spent the night canvassing the area. The police commissioner said they’re doing all they can in their investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 617-343-4470.
