Mainly dry, but warming up through the weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy weekend, Utah! We closed out the work week with cool, below-average temperatures, but high pressure allows our warming trend to continue for the weekend and highs to bounce back to seasonal norms and climb lightly above them in spots.

Expect temperatures to top out in the mid to upper 80s along the Wasatch Front and in the northern half of the state, with a range of 80s in the southern half of the state while Washington County will hit the low to mid 90s. It’s going to be a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine statewide, but we will see some wildfire smoke keep haze in the forecast and allow for moderate air quality for parts of the Wasatch Front, NE Utah and in Iron and Washington Counties.

We see a bit of a change heading into Sunday, as an enhanced southerly flow upticks and winds could pick up again. This southerly flow increases as a larger storm system, a low-pressure trough, near the Pacific Northwest intensifies and strengthens southerly winds. We could see winds between 20-30 mph that will keep temperatures mild but also welcome back isolated storm potential as we could draw moisture back into parts of the state. The best chance for isolated storms for the Wasatch Front would start in the afternoon and the chance of nocturnal storms is there, meaning we may see active skies into the early morning hours of Monday.

This broad trough in the Pacific Northwest will keep the weather pattern interesting in Utah heading into next week. We will see gusty winds and showery precipitation ahead of an organized cold front Monday into Tuesday. Right now, the front looks to usher in temperatures 15-20º below seasonal averages and the moisture potential looks healthiest for areas north of the I-70 and I-15 interchange. It’s early to say with confidence, but the chance of snow in the high Uintas and Wasatch Mountains can’t be ruled out early next week!

For now, get ready to welcome in some wet weather and cooler air towards the start of the work week. Our weather pattern will continue to evolve and we will be watching it to keep you forewarned!

Bottom Line? After a few days of below-average temperatures, get ready for warmer weather this weekend.
