One of these Circle K stores not like the others, says health department

Health inspectors visited all three Circle K stores in Maricopa over the last two weeks and found one of them wasn’t up to standard.

The Tempe-based subsidiary of the global convenience store conglomerate Couche-Tard is known for its Polar Pop soft drinks and Inner Circle rewards club, daily wares for thousands in Maricopa. That’s why the company recently proposed doubling its presence in the city with three new locations that are all meandering through the bureaucratic process at present, two on Smith-Enke Road and one at The Wells.

With so many round, red signs cropping up around the city, restaurant inspectors with the Pinal County Health Department decided to tour them all in recent days — serving up two flawless report cards before pumping the breaks when they found an unsanitary situation at their final port of call.

The inspectors gave the Circle K on John Wayne Parkway near Edison Road a “satisfactory” rating Friday morning after they found an employee sink was inaccessible due to boxes that piled up in front of it.

This was during their tour of five local food-purveying businesses between Aug. 29 and Sept. 9, three of which were Circle Ks (or is it Circles K?).

Health inspectors handed the Circle K on John Wayne Parkway near Bowlin Road an “excellent” rating on Friday. The other Circle K on Honeycutt Road at Porter Road was rated “excellent” Aug. 29.

Inspectors also visited JB Farmer’s Convenience Store and Dollar General in Hidden Valley on Monday, found no violations and rated them both “excellent.”

What do the ratings mean?

Excellent: All priority standards are observed as compliant.

Satisfactory: One or more priority standards is out of compliance. All priority standards are corrected at the time of inspection.

Needs improvement: One or more priority standards is out of compliance. At least one violation is not corrected at the time of inspection. When violations are corrected to the satisfaction of the department during a follow-up inspection, a satisfactory rating will be given.

Unacceptable: One or more violations observed are an “imminent health hazard.” Hazards include the misuse of poisonous or toxic materials, onset of an apparent foodborne illness outbreak and unsanitary conditions that may endanger public health. Hazards can stem from fires, floods, electrical or water problems, and sewage backup. When violations are corrected to the satisfaction of the department during a follow-up inspection, a satisfactory rating will be given.
