WILKES-BARRE — A Wilkes-Barre woman charged with spitting and kicking a police officer multiple times was sentenced to up to two years in prison but eligible for parole in two months.
Mariah Alee Figueroa Torres, 23, last known address as Academy Street, spat that struck a Wilkes-Barre police officer in the face with saliva, kicked the officer multiple times including once in the grown area, and spat inside a holding cell at police headquarters on Feb. 25, 2024, according to court records.
The incident began at her Academy Street residence where police responded to a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend, court records say.
Officers separated Torres from the man and offered Torres a ride to a friend’s apartment at the Sherman Hills apartment complex.
Court records say Torres lunged and slapped her boyfriend resulting in officers attempting to remove her from a hallway of the Academy Street apartment building.
During the scuffle, Torres spat and struck the officer in the face and kicked the officer multiple times in the legs and groin area, court records say.
Luzerne County Judge Joseph F. Sklarosky Jr. sentenced Torres to five months to two years at the county correctional facility for assault upon a law enforcement officer plus one-year probation. Torres pled guilty to the charge Oct. 21.
Torres was awarded 11 days of pre-sentencing credit for time served at the county correctional facility and is eligible for parole after serving two months in prison.
Under the terms of the guilty plea, Torres was subject to writing an apology letter to the police officer.
