Tua Tagovailoa improves to 4-0 in Week 1

Saint Louis alumnus and Ewa Beach native Tua Tagovailoa improved to 4-0 as a starter during Week 1 of his NFL career, guiding the Miami Dolphins to a 20-17 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

The Dolphins fell behind 14-0 early to the Jaguars and trailed 17-7 at halftime but outscored Jacksonville 13-0 in the second half, ending the game on a 52-yard field goal from Jason Sanders.

Tagovailoa, playing in his first regular season game since signing a contract extension with the Dolphins, completed 23 of his 37 passes for 336 yards and a touchdown, also running the ball once for 11 yards. Tagovailoa, the NFL’s leading passer in 2023, was not at his best on Sunday but, taking a key sack in the third quarter that got Miami out of field goal range, led the Dolphins to victory regardless.

Star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained in a minor traffic incident prior to the game but returned in time to haul seven receptions for 130 yards and an 80-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Tagovailoa and the Dolphins have a quick turnaround and will host the Buffalo Bills on Thursday at 2:15 p.m. HST on Amazon Prime Video.
