Born on April 20, 1940, in Jerseyville, Ginny was the daughter of the late Herschel and Dorothy (Angel) Powers. She was a proud 1958 graduate of Jersey Community High School, where she began forming the strong connections to her community that lasted throughout her life.
On April 28, 1962, Ginny married Darrell Brooks in Jerseyville, and together they shared 36 years of marriage before his passing on May 25, 1998. Their marriage was built on love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for family and life’s simple joys.
Ginny dedicated 27 years to Jersey Community Unit School District #100, where she retired as Head Cook at East Elementary School in Jerseyville. Her warmth and kindness touched countless students and staff over the years, and she took pride in her role, making each day a little brighter for those she served.
An avid traveler, Ginny enjoyed exploring new destinations, making memories along the way. She had a love for shopping, finding joy in picking out the perfect gifts for loved ones, and she was a talented crafter who spent hours creating heartfelt projects. When she wasn’t on the go, she could often be found enjoying the comfort of a good Hallmark movie.
Ginny’s greatest joy came from her family. Surviving are her two daughters and their husbands, Darla and Randy Drainer of Grafton and Jane and Stuart “Jim” Renken of Jerseyville; five grandchildren, Laura, Natalie, Nicole, Parker, Paige; and five great-grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and happiness; she is also survived by a niece, Rhonda (Rick) Davidson of Delhi.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Ronald Brainerd; a niece, Joy Brainerd; and a nephew, Chip Brainerd.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 12 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Out of respect for everyone’s safety, the family requests that all those in attendance wear a mask.
Ginny will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hamilton Primary School or to her family.
Ginny will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, and dear friend to many. Her gentle spirit, warm smile, and loving heart will remain forever in the memories of all who knew and loved her.
