50th annual Peace Race kicks off in downtown Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Runners from all over are lacing up their shoes for the annual Youngstown Peace Race on Sunday.

The goal is to unite people peacefully through running.

This race has hosted many of the most celebrated runners. Founder Jack Cessna would bring in international runners, some characterized as “some of the best runners in the world.”

Last year, over 800 pairs of running shoes hit the pavement. This year, runners will be able to participate in a 25K, a 10K, a 2-mile race and a 200-meter kid’s fun run. Overall winners will receive prizes.

25K starts at 8:30 a.m. 200-Meter Kid’s Fun Run starts at 9 a.m. 2-Mile Run starts at 9:30 a.m. 10K starts at 10 a.m.

First News spoke with many event organizers Sunday morning.

There are a few road closures currently in place for the Youngstown Peace Race.

Included in the closures are Tod Avenue, Weaver Road, Price Road, Calvary Run Drive and Milton Avenue at Calvary Run Drive intersection.

Also included are West Glacier Drive, West West Drive, West Cohasset Drive, Cascade Road at High Drive and Valley Drive at the entrance at East Park Drive.

East Park Drive, Chestnut Hill Drive, West Newport Drive and Old Mill Drive will also be blocked off.

Along with Lanterman`s Mill, East Newport Drive and Kreider’s Entrance.

These closures will be in effect until 1:30 p.m.
