1 dead after police exchange gunfire with suspect in South Jordan

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — An officer-involved critical incident occurred in South Jordan Friday night as police exchanged fire with a theft suspect, leaving one dead, according to South Jordan Police.

Shortly after 10:20 p.m. on Jan. 3, South Jordan Police officers responded to a vehicle theft in progress near 9400 South 4600 West. Police arrived on scene and found a male suspect inside a vehicle.

The suspect fired a gun at officers, police said, and officers returned fire.

The individual reportedly then fled on foot, and was later found in a nearby yard. Officers from multiple agencies “flooded the area,” a press release from South Jordan Police states, and more shots were fired.

In this exchange, the suspect was shot, and police took him into custody before taking him to a hospital for treatment. The suspect later died at the hospital, police said.

“The Officer Involved Critical Incident team has arrived at the scene to investigate this incident,” the release states. “The involved officers were placed on administrative leave pending further investigation. The area will remain closed as the investigation continues into the morning.”
